Choosing the Right Qurbani Animal

Selecting the right animal for Qurbani is an important decision. Islam has provided clear guidelines to ensure your sacrifice is valid and accepted.

Age Requirements

Each animal must meet the minimum age requirement:

Physical Conditions

The animal must be free from defects. The following animals are NOT valid for Qurbani:

  • Blind in one or both eyes

  • Visibly sick or diseased

  • Lame and unable to walk properly

  • Extremely thin with no marrow in bones

  • Missing more than one-third of the ear or tail

Recommended Qualities

While the above are minimum requirements, it is Sunnah to choose an animal that is:

  • Healthy and well-fed

  • Large and meaty

  • Free from any visible defects

  • Has a pleasant appearance

Goat vs Cow — Which is Better?

Both are valid, but there are practical differences:

  • Goat — one share per animal, easier to manage, more affordable

  • Cow — seven shares per animal, more economical when splitting with family or friends
